Mumbai University Ph.D. Admissions 2019: Dates, Admission Procedure, Application Form
Mumbai University offers Ph.D in the concerned subjects of research of the faculty of arts, commerce, science, law and technology. The programme is for a minimum of 3 years.
- The University invites applications for admission to the Ph.D. Program every year in the month of April.
- Minimum Eligibility to apply for Ph.D. is Masters degree from a recognized university with a minimum 55% marks in aggregate.
- Admissions to the Ph.D. program is offered on the basis of Scores obtained in PET (Ph.D. Entrance Test) Score.
- Applicants who have qualified in GATE/SET/NET/(JRF)examinations are exempt from appearing for PET.
- Applicants who holds a Teacher Fellowship with CSIR/UGC/ICAR/ICMR and DBT are also exempted.

Mumbai University Eligibility Criteria

A candidate should fulfill any of the following criterion in order to apply for Ph.D. research program at Mumbai University:
- Candidates should hold Master’s Degree/ M.Phil. Degree in relevant discipline from a recognized university with minimum 55% marks in total for general category and 50% marks in case of reserved category.
- The applicant should be a teacher having full time teaching experience of at least two years in Degree College or five years in Junior College.
- The candidate must be a graduate and working in National Laboratories/Institutes/Government/ Private Organization, nominated/sponsored by the respective employer.
- NET/SET/GATE/JRF qualified candidates of the apex bodies in higher/technical/ professional education such as CSIR/UGC/ICAR or other equivalent examination.
Note: A candidate belonging to backward class from Maharashtra state only is eligible for claiming seat under reserved category.

For PET:
You can download the Application Form from the University website.
You should then fill the form with the necessary personal and educational details.
Application Fee: You should pay the following Application Fee of Rs. 1000 for general category and Rs. 500 for reserved category, either through
- Demand Draft in the name of ‘Finance & Accounts Officer of the University of Mumbai’ payable at Mumbai
- ‘By cash’ in Room No 13, Ground Floor, University of Mumbai, Fort, Mumbai 400030
You should enclose the DD / Receipt of such payment with the Application Form and submit the same to the Thesis Section Room No 129, 1st Floor, University of Mumbai, Fort, Mumbai-400032
If you are seeking exemption from PET , you should skip the above process, and directly apply through the process given below.
For Admission to Ph.D. Programme:
You should apply directly to the concerned Research Centre affiliated with Mumbai University.
You must pay the Application fee of Rs. 100 in the form of a Demand Draft or cash to the concerned recognized Research Centre of University of Mumbai within 15 working days from the date of the declaration of the Ph.D. Entrance Test (PET) results.
Mumbai University Admission Process

You will be selected on the basis of Ph.D. Entrance Test (PET) followed by a Personal Interview at the Research Centre should you qualify the PET exam. The syllabus for Mumbai PhD PET exam shall consist of various topics in compulsory/core subject and papers of post graduate degree level of the exam prescribed by Mumbai University for the subject.
The question papers will comprise of three type of questions
- Objective type of Questions: 40 marks
- Short answers: 30 marks
- Long answers: 30 marks
You should secure a minimum of 50 marks in PET. The result of this exam is valid for a period of three years.
Exemptions: You are exempted from writing the test:
- If you have qualified GATE/SET/NET/JRF exam and are holders of teachers’ fellowships of apex bodies like CSIR/UGC/ICAR/ICMR/DBT.
- If you have completed an M. Phil. Degree from University of Mumbai as per the UGC guidelines from time to time.
- If you have completed an M. Phil. Degree from any other recognized Universities in India as per the UGC guidelines from time to time.
Mumbai University Reservation Criteria
The reservation policy will be as per the norms prescribed by the Government of Maharashtra.
