Twitter announces expanded parental leave

Twitter is the latest tech company to announce an expanded parental leave policy, offering all new parents 20 weeks of paid time off. The tech industry seems to be leading the way among industries offering robust family leave due to the industry’s notable lack of women.

In the last year, Netflix, Etsy, Facebook, and a handful of others have upgraded their policies to include more workers and more time off than ever. New York and San Francisco also passed landmark leave policies this month, but the majority of workers still rely on their employers for paid family leave. Jeffrey Siminoff, Twitter’s vice president of inclusion and diversity, described the company’s new policy as a way to be “inclusion advancing,” which seemed to mean it seeks to include more employees than ever before.

Tech companies hope that better policies will attract and retain female workers.

Startups find employee engagement more challenging than funds

For startups, employee engagement seems to be the most challenging job. Some have the challenges of establishing a unique culture while for others it’s about ensuring new hires remain as engaged as those who began their careers at the start of the company’s journey.

Simplilearn, a professional certification provider, has a practice called ‘Free Look Period’, which allows the employee to understand the role, team dynamics and work culture. It’s an opportunity to ensure that the new hire and the company are a perfect fit.  COO Gerald Jaideep says that the objective  is to link the core values and vision of the company with business goals and to replicate behaviours in people to ensure they deliver.

Vijay Sharma, co-founder & CEO, Belong, which uses data analytics in hiring
said engagement of
new employees starts much before their actual joining dates. A few weeks into accepting the offer, respective teammates start engaging them at multiple levels by inviting them to attend in-house events.

Paytm , mobile payments platform has developed a tool called ‘Pulse’ to measure engagements of teams on a regular basis. It’s an anonymous survey which is looked upon as an important mechanism by the manager and the team to get honest reviews.

The objective is to go deep dive and resolve issues wherever the scores are below organizational average. The tool has helped in identifying some gaps in the induction process which the company is working to fix.
B Mohan Kumar, founder director & chief evangelizing officer of iAccept Softwares, uses special training imparted to its employees as a tool to make them feel valued.
